Alumni on the Move: Emma Magruder
What motivated you to pursue the Integrated Marketing Communications master’s program at WVU?
I was motivated to do the IMC program as I wanted to have a better grasp of the broader marketing and communications landscape. I studied public relations in undergrad, and the IMC program gave me the opportunity to see how public relations works with advertising, marketing, and sales to create a single, omnichannel message -- supporting stakeholders at every entry point.
What part of the program helped you the most in your current career?
Looking back, the time management skills I learned have proved invaluable in my career! As I am in a hybrid position at an agency, the ability to manage myself across several projects (or in the program, classes) helped me exponentially in my career.
Were there any courses, projects, or faculty mentors that had a significant impact on your professional development?
The PR Fundamentals course was particularly impactful! I had a soft spot for public relations going into the program, and that course solidified my desire to stay in a largely PR-oriented role.
Can you share a bit about your career path since graduating?
Currently, I serve as a senior account executive at FleishmanHillard in their Washington, D.C. office. I started as an intern while I was finishing the IMC program before being hired on full time and promoted this past October. My day-to-day looks different every day, but I primarily support corporate and executive communications across clients in the public sector and defense, food and beverage, and healthcare industries.
What accomplishments or milestones are you most proud of since completing the program?
I am most proud of using my degree to really push myself out of my comfort zone. I had never lived outside of West Virginia or imagined working at a global company, and now I live and work in the DC area for one of the world's largest PR firms.
What advice would you give to someone considering the IMC program?
My best advice is to jump in without hesitation! Commit yourself to the work and the materials, and you won't regret it. You really get out of the program what you put into it.
What do you enjoy doing outside your work?
I love to travel, read, hike, bake, and hang out with my cat! I've recently started my sourdough journey and have been enjoying all the things you can do with sourdough and sourdough discard.
Any fun facts, hobbies, or personal interests you’d like to share?
My fun fact is I can drive a zamboni!
