AI has been a topic in the marketing and communications industry for a few years,
and it really picked up steam in 2022 with the roll out of ChatGPT. We’ve seen
AI integrations with Grammarly, Hootsuite, Google and Adobe, but
Canva’s most recent release may be the most comprehensive AI update we’ve seen.
The Australian-based design company has created a cult following for making graphic design more accessible and a more streamlined process, but its AI-powered update really expands what it offers to its users. These AI tools are designed to convert your designs into blogs, social media posts, emails, and more to save time on manually editing documents. Let’s look at some of the new features.
The Features
Magic Studio, Canva’s AI toolbox, is a collection of new design features and integrations within Canva. There are some easy to guess features like Magic Edit and Magic Grab, but there are some truly impressive and innovative features with Magic Morph, Magic Write, Magic Switch, Magic Expand and Magic Media.
Magic Morph is a great tool! We’ve all been there — a specific font style in mind, but you can’t seem to find what you’re looking for. This is where Magic Morph comes in. You select an item on your design, and in the AI text box, describe what you want the font to look like. The provided Canva examples are green matte and glossy balloons.
Have you needed to create content in another language or transform copy from one
format to another? Magic Switch allows users to instantly transform an existing
design into another format and translates designs into over 100 languages without
leaving the page. It’s a nifty way to generate multichannel campaigns from a single
design and save designers time that’s better spent focusing on more demanding tasks.
Magic Media creates visual assets in a text-to-image and a text-to-video format so that generating your ideas are right at your fingertips. From a single text prompt, find the exact image or video in the style you’re envisioning to help with your design and campaign materials. Here, we asked Canva to show us a WVU football game.
While Canva has rolled out these features for everyone to try, only some features are available to base level accounts and in certain countries. Some of the more impressive AI-powered designs are only accessible with a Canva Pro account.
Perhaps the best thing out of this feature? An update that is sure to get legal on your side. Canva Shield is an advanced AI safety, data and privacy feature. Administrators of teams receive control options to help in the control of scaling projects in Canva using AI. Designers will have an option to opt in to train Canva’s AI rather than having to opt out as part of a major data and privacy update.
