Carin Giordano Alumni on the Move

The marketing communications industry is always changing and evolving. Since the launch of the IMC program 20 years ago, the industry has changed, and so has the degree path here at WVU. We’ve added specializations, graduate certificates and new masters programs to respond to the changing industry and keep our students at the forefront of innovation. But what happens when you’ve graduated and the industry continues to evolve?

For Carin Giordano, the Alumni Lifelong Learning Program was her solution. Carin graduated in 2006 with her M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communications. In 2021, the industry had changed, and Carin recognized the need for her to sharpen her skills. She returned to WVU to get her M.S. in Digital Marketing Communications.

Hear from Carin about her decision to return and her experience using the Alumni Lifelong Learning Program.

Why did you decide to come back for a second degree?

Why not return? My experience back in 2004-2006 during the IMC program infancy was a rigorous but great one. The student advisors then and now fully support students. They know far too well the challenges many students face with work / life balance and the circus juggling that has to happen to see you succeed. Ultimately striving for success is the goal and no one wants to see it happen for you more than the team at WVU IMC.

Why would you recommend alumni take advantage of the Alumni Lifelong Learning Program?

In one simple word – KAIZEN, constant and never-ending improvement. Marketing, communications and digital fields are forever growing at lightning algorithm speeds. Companies know this and look for inquisitive individuals that strive to grow. I am someone that returned for my second master’s degree because I saw the environment changing and knew I must stay on the cutting edge. After my additional degree, my role changed and I was promoted from social media manager in charge of one business unit to SEO/SEM manager of seven business units. I know I can always return to IMC if I need to enhance or refresh my skills preparing me for my next career move.

How have your degrees helped you in your career?

My degrees have helped me act as a consultant and teacher to others within my company. During much of the program I tried to use the assignments give to enhance company projects and initiatives. My supervisor was able to witness the relevance of my education and I used my learning to create marketing strategies, KPIs and goals around SEO initiatives. Up next…building standard work.

What has been your favorite part of completing your degrees?

I not only gained an education but many lifelong friends and network opportunities. I still reach out to faculty and alumni for career and marketing feedback and just to stay in touch personally. After graduation, I attended the wedding of someone I graduated with and we are in touch regularly.

What would you say to encourage someone on the fence, unsure if they want to go back to school, especially after a longer break since undergraduate schooling?

Take the leap! If I can do it after battling back from cancer, working full-time and raising a family, then anyone can. Set the goal, and prioritize your time. Find friends, family and coworkers that support, not inhibit you from attaining that goal. Finally, WVU IMC Mountaineers are there to help see you succeed. Once you join the program your advisors and fellow students cheer you on and are there to help. YOU GOT THIS!
