My Marcom Story: Neal Stewart

|

Neal Stewart's journey from a seasoned professional in the beer industry to Chief Commercial Officer at Dan-O’s Seasoning in Louisville, Kentucky, is a testament to the transformative power of education, specifically the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) program at West Virginia University.

As a 2019 graduate of the IMC program, Neal found the perfect blend of reputation, flexibility and practicality. Drawn by the institution's esteemed alumni network and the ability to customize his learning experience, Neal embarked on a journey that would redefine his approach to marketing.

What set the IMC program apart for Neal was its emphasis on practical application. Throughout his coursework, he learned a framework that was consistently applied across different subjects. From setting objectives to executing strategies, each class reinforced the importance of a systematic approach to marketing.

“I think what was most beneficial for me was that it made me learn the content and then I had to apply it. So, you know, certainly someone could just go read books or listen to podcasts, but when you have to actually apply it through writing a paper or creating a plan, it kind of consolidates all of the things that you learned and makes you apply it.”

The hands-on nature of the program, where students are encouraged to apply their learning through writing papers, creating plans and participating in discussions, proved invaluable for Neal. It not only solidified his understanding of the concepts but also helped him break free from bad habits and adopt a more disciplined approach to marketing.

Neal's career trajectory showcases the versatility and relevance of the IMC program. From working with major beer brands to spearheading marketing efforts for a fast-growing seasoning company, Neal's diverse experiences underscore the program's ability to prepare professionals for success in any industry.

“So it just kind of triggers different things within your learning experience. So unless you are disciplined enough to, you know, read a book and write a dissertation or a book report on that, you're probably not getting the same out of it as you would when you are interacting with students. You're participating in discussion boards, you're reading textbooks, you're reading additional materials, and then applying it in kind of a real life fashion.”

Now, as an adjunct professor at West Virginia University, Neal pays it forward by sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of marketers. He invites prospective students to join the IMC program, emphasizing the sense of community and professional growth it offers.

Whether you're early in your career or a seasoned professional like Neal, the IMC program presents a valuable opportunity to enhance your skills and advance your career in marketing. Consider following Neal's footsteps and unlock your potential in the dynamic world of integrated marketing communications.
