Social Media Optimization: An In-Depth Look

Social media optimization (SMO) is one of the most important keys to maximizing your online presence. For small business owners to large businesses, making the most of every opportunity is crucial for success and with SMO you can achieve just that.

So what exactly is social media optimization?

SMO is the practice of enhancing a brand’s online presence and reputation through social media channels by strategically creating, curating, and promoting content. The fundamentals of SMO involves tailoring content to fit each social media platform, maximizing share-ability, and increasing the potential for user engagement. SMO is very similar to search engine optimization (SEO), but for social media. Like SEO, there are some things that you can pay attention to, but nothing is more important than paying attention to your audience. Your audience matters the most, but also the way you fit in the social media environment is equally important. When all of this comes together and your social media presence is optimized properly, the likelihood of your content showing up in search results will greatly increase.

Here are a few tips that can be used to properly optimize your social media presence.

Tip 1: Pick the Right Platform

Understanding your audience and their personas is crucial for learning where these audience segments spend most of their time online. If you’re B2B, If you’re B2C, that might include any other social media network. When choosing the right platform form you must also consider that your content will need to be tailored for each one. For example, X is used for short posts, while Facebook is used for average length posts. Also depending on what type of products your business is selling will also play a factor in which platform you chose to promote them on. Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram are good choices for promoting manufactured handmade products.

Tip 2: Use Visuals in Your Marketing

Utilizing visual marketing is a powerful tool for SMO because it captures attention quickly and effectively. Nothing catches someone’s eye better than visual content. Social media has become a fast-scrolling environment and eye catching visuals such as images, videos, and infographics can all increase engagement and boost your content’s visibility. Even B2B channels such as LinkedIn have users who react better to visual content.

Tip 3: Encourage Sharing

Encouraging users to share your content is a key strategy for SMO. It doesn’t hurt to ask your co-workers, employees, or friends to share your content. Doing this will amplify your reach beyond your immediate audience. When followers share your content, they expose your content to their own networks, leading to increased visibility and potential new followers. The more your content is shared, the higher it ranks in social media algorithms, increasing the likelihood of gaining more engagement and driving traffic to your social media page or website.

Tip 4: Use Hashtags

Using hashtags is the best way to make your content discoverable to a wider audience. Hashtags can help categorize your content and enable your posts to appear in relevant searches and trending topic feeds, connecting with users who may not already follow your account. By using trending or niche hashtags related to your brand, you can increase engagement and boost visibility. When it comes to using hashtags it is important to not over do it. On platforms like Facebook and X, using too many hashtags looks like you're trying too much, and excessive use of hashtags in a post can lead to a drop in engagement. On a platform like Instagram, it was found that posts accompanied by a hashtag receive about 10% more engagement compared to posts that have no hashtags at all.

Tip 5: Utilize Social Media Optimization Tools

Having to log into social media each day and create content can be a daunting and cumbersome task. However, SMO is all about efficiency. Utilizing platforms such as SocialPilot and Hootsuites to manage social media calendars can make this task much easier. It is far easier to schedule your posts for a whole week in advance and ensure that a schedule is being followed each week. When it comes to creating the content itself, Canva is a great tool to use. It can be used to create customized images for every platform. Ensuring that your created images are tailored for the specific social media platform that you will be posting to.

Social Media Optimization Techniques

In order to reach your social media goals, you will have to create a strategy and be consistent with it over time. Knowing your ideal social media users and performing a competitive analysis is vital before moving on to anything else.

If you are a brand, you can analyze what your competitors are sharing and how they are interacting with their customer base. You can then evaluate what is working and create an original strategy that incorporates what has been proven to work well with similar audiences. Once this is established, the strategy must be tested and changed based on the results until the strategy becomes perfect.
