More Than a Degree: Katrina Brooks on the Value of WVU's Hands-On Approach

Katrina Brooks

After reviewing WVU’s M.S. Digital Marketing Communications online program, and finding that most of the courses have certifications as part of the coursework, Katrina Brooks knew this was the program for her.

Reflecting on her time at WVU, Brooks fondly recalls the camaraderie and support she received from her instructors, advisors, and classmates. "There isn’t one person. All my instructors, my advisors, and classmates made an impact on my experience,” she says.

One memory that stands out is the time she spent recording video pitches for her classes. "There were so many takes!" Brooks laughs. "I started singing, 'Follow the script, follow the script.' Now, whenever I have to record something and keep messing up, I’ll start singing it."

I’ve enjoyed all of my classes. They were more than simply writing papers and participating in discussion boards. I enjoyed the real-world, hands-on approach to our assignments. It was nice we could pick the companies for our assignments. We could even pick the delivery method for our final assignment in one class. Katrina Brooks

For incoming students, Brooks offers this advice: "Take advantage of getting access to your classes early. Use these extra days, even if it's just getting yourself organized (however that may be). You should always read your syllabus."

Brooks is a Fall 2024 graduate of the Digital Marketing Communications online master’s degree at WVU.
