Last year WVU Marketing Communications produced a piece predicting the biggest marketing trends to come in 2020, before the year took a dramatic turn. In light of many unforeseen events, the biggest trends of the year drastically changed. COVID-19 and other events pushed marketing communications professionals to test their creative capabilities and ability to pivot, forever changing the industry.
In light of another unpredictable year ahead, the WVU Marketing Communications graduate programs hosted a Twitter Chat discussing "Predicting 2021 Marketing Trends" to encourage staff, faculty, alumni and students to consider what will be the next biggest thing in the industry.
Q1: 2020 saw the rise of many new marketing communications tactics, which of these trends do you think will continue to rise in popularity going into 2021?
Q2: Virtual events dominated the industry in 2020 in the face of social distancing guidelines. As we move into 2021, do you think brands will continue to utilize these experiences?
Q3: In order to keep up with industry trends it is important marketing communications professionals are analyzing the tactics of other brands. What brands are on your "watchlist" for 2021 to draw inspiration and learn from?
Q4: Many brands utilized their platform to address important issues in 2020. As we move into 2021, do you think this trend will continue? How can brands include more activism into their marketing communications strategies?
Q5: In platform shopping is beginning to become a standard feature for popular social media sites, such as Instagram. Do you think the use of social commerce will continue to grow among consumers? Or will social media sites have to reevaluate?
Q6: Many unforeseen tactics took over the industry throughout 2020. As we move into 2021, what tactics do you think will overtake the industry? Is there something that is not being talked about now that will rise as an industry standard?
