In this panel session from RJ Thompson, Immediate Past President of the American Marketing Association - Pittsburgh chapter and Adjunct Instructor in the WVU IMC program, Rich Lewis, Creative Director of Eat N' Park Hospitality Group and President of AIGA Pittsburgh, and Dwayne Waite, Marketing Director of Games and Events at ReedPop and Vice President of the American Advertising Federation - Pittsburgh chapter, we looked at the exciting world of marketing, design, and communication at this engaging panel discussion led by three accomplished industry leaders in the Pittsburgh area.
The Pittsburgh Community
Pittsburgh is a city known as a launching point for your career. Young professionals flock to the city to start their careers, and while some will leave the Steel City, many will find they ultimately end up back in the city. There is a thriving marketing, communications and design community in Pittsburgh, and it is largely fueled by networking and connections.
Pittsburgh is a city that flies under the radar. With a population of about 300,000, the city offers new professionals the city life experience without being overwhelming. There are also great opportunities with some of the large companies headquartered in or around Pittsburgh. Some of the top companies located in Pittsburgh are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Duolingo, The Kraft Heinz Company, American Eagle and Eat'n Park.
Professional Organizations
Professional organizations are a great way to begin your network and make lasting friendships in the industry. Beyond the industry alone, professional organizations are great for people who have moved to a new city. They help you meet new people in your industry, open up job opportunities down the road and provide you lasting friendships beyond a simple career connection.
Some of the top organizations that have regional chapters are groups like the American Marketing Association (AMA), American Advertising Federation (AAF), Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), etc. There are many more that could be in your city! These organizations hold different events like networking events, happy hours, conferences and other times for the local community to come together.
Have Your Work Recognized at AdFlux 23
As a student, you may think your work is not up to par with the industry, but this isn’t true! Your work is real, industry work, and it’s time you have it recognized for your hard work, creativity and passion.
At AdFlux23, an intercollegiate advertising and design competition taking place during Pittsburgh Advertising Week 10/16 - 10/21, have your work recognized by a panel of industry experts. Sponsored by the American Marketing Association – Pittsburgh and the American Institute for Graphic Artists – Pittsburgh, the organizations encourage undergraduate and graduate students to submit their advertising work to the competition for free.
An exhibition of the winning work opens on October 20 at the Community College of Allegheny County’s West Hall Gallery. Winners will receive an award whether in attendance or not.
