Robin Rectenwald, IMC ‘18, never anticipated a career in client services and in the fast-paced environment of an agency. She was thrown into the world of agencies with her first job out of her undergraduate degree, but she’s never looked back.
“I was offered the position and from there that's where I learned everything from media list, building, press release writing, client services,” she said. “And I just loved it. I fell in love with it.”
Robin picked up the basics of a PR agency in her first role where she learned about building media lists and press releases. She had time to hone in on these skills in smaller, boutique agencies, and once she had a grasp of these skills, she found herself wanting to know more about the strategy behind some of these decisions. That’s where IMC came in.
Robin learned skills in the IMC program that she wasn’t experiencing in her role, but she was able to take them from the classroom back to her clients. From here, she made the leap into a larger, global agency.
“So for people who may get bored in routines or who can't sit at a desk from 9 to 5, agency is a really great lifestyle for people who like to work on things a little bit at a time,” she said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”

Her advice for someone looking to get into the agency world? Network, network, network.
“People are welcome to reach out to me and just have a conversation and find out because there's so many different types of agencies, so many different sizes, and some have specialties,” she said. “My biggest advice is to talk to somebody, talk to different people in the agency world and find out what kind of agency you might be interested in.”
