Angelo Jasa-Phillips researched graduate programs nationwide and ultimately chose WVU’s Integrated Marketing Communications program. Factors influencing his decision included the convenience of asynchronous classes, the program's pace, the balance between textbook and real-world work, practitioner faculty, and recommendations from alumni.
Jasa-Phillips began his undergraduate studies in theater in Rochester, NY, in 2010. Believing that marketing was the most theatrical aspect of any business, he transitioned to the field. At that time, digital and social media were still emerging technologies in marketing communications. Figuring out how to capitalize on these platforms was something that interested Jasa-Phillips, and he dove head-first into creating and executing digital communications strategies.
Jasa-Phillips’ goal is to help others in historically marginalized communities find pathways and access to education that will lead them toward liberation.
One of my goals is to help serve in an educational organization or higher education institution in order to help make change in systems that have been historically inaccessible for many people. With this degree, I would like to lead a marketing and communications department to help craft and deploy messaging, stories, and programming to communities that need access to education and ultimately to social and economic mobility. Outside of marketing communications, Jasa-Phillips loves the performing and visual arts as both a performer and a consumer/supporter. “You'll either see me in a dance class with a ballet company, watching a musical at a theater, or simply creating art, whether it's content creating and/or singing by myself,” he added. He has also been enjoying cooking and learning to cook dishes from his native Philippines. He and his husband love to be in the kitchen, and cooking has been a stress reliever for them.
As he begins the M.S. IMC program as part of the Executive cohort, he is looking forward to refining his skills, learning new strategies and tactics, and building upon his 10-year career working in the digital marketing and communications industry. He is also looking forward to developing and solidifying skills that will help diversify his professional experience and move into a leadership role. These skills include public relations, leadership in marketing and communications strategies, digital analytics, and creative strategy.
Jasa-Phillips is currently a director of digital and social media in Washington, DC. He’s ready to begin collaborating with the program’s support staff, faculty, and his peers to become a better marketing communications professional.
