Social media platforms are always changing, rolling out new features to level up user experience and engagement. Let's dive into seven fresh updates across platforms like Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Snapchat, X, and LinkedIn.
Broadcast Channel Replies
It might sound a little counterintuitive, but Instagram now lets creators allow replies in their Broadcast Channels. Replies won't show up in the main channel feed; you'll find them tucked away in specific messages within the Broadcast Channel thread.
This move makes sense, given the buzz happening in broadcast channels. It's not a full-blown group chat, more like a focused discussion space. This keeps your engaged broadcast viewers all in one spot.
Threads Crossposting from Facebook and Instagram
We don't always recommend it, but you can now cross-post from both Instagram and Facebook to Threads. You'll find this option in your composer settings. While it has its limits (no cross-posting Reels, for example), it's a feature Meta's been testing and has now rolled out to everyone.
Cross-posting saves time, but let's be real: each platform has its own aesthetic. What works on Instagram might not land on Threads. Still, if you're all about efficiency, it's a handy tool.
Notes-Like Feature on TikTok
TikTok's testing a new feature that lets you share short, text-based "thoughts" in a speech bubble. You'll see it on your Stories bubble and profile. Sound familiar? Instagram launched something similar a few months back.
Instagram's Notes feature has been a hit with younger users, and the app-copying game is strong. We'll see if TikTok's version takes off.
Improved Safety Measures for Teens on TikTok
TikTok's teaming up with The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) on a new "Digital Safety Partnership" for families. The goal? Spark conversations between parents and teens about online safety.
TikTok's release states: "We consulted members of our Content Advisory Council, Youth Council, and parent TikTok creators to ensure we're considering the needs of those the agreement is intended to help. To help caregivers learn about this and other digital parenting tips, we'll work with FOSI to raise awareness of resources available to families, supported by free advertising space on TikTok."
New features include in-app resources for parents and improved advice guides.
Sponsored Snaps Ad Opportunities
Snapchat's adding new ad placements, with "Sponsored Snaps" coming soon. Think LinkedIn's sponsored InMails, but in Snap form.
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel notes, "Sponsored Snaps appear in the chat inbox as a new Snap without a push notification, and opening the message is optional. This lets advertisers engage potential customers all the way down the funnel within a single ad unit; raise awareness with broad reach in the chat inbox, improve consideration with people who view the Snap, and drive conversion with an in-message call-to-action."
Will users be into this? Promotional DMs can be a bit intrusive, so we'll have to wait and see.
X Connected TV App
X has officially launched the beta version of X TV, claiming it's "a massive leap forward in transforming X into a video-first platform."
Looking a lot like YouTube TV, this app will spotlight trending content, powered by X's advancing AI systems. Expect new ad opportunities for this TV app.
X has signed video content deals with Khloe Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon, Tulsi Gabbard, Jim Rome, WWE, The Big 3 league of retired NBA players and Verzuz.
In-Feed Video Carousels on LinkedIn
LinkedIn's pushing video content with in-feed carousels of video clips. The videos you see should match your in-app activity and profile info. It's LinkedIn's way of promoting its growing user-generated video content and reaching younger audiences.
In the last month, LinkedIn reported a whopping 1.5 million pieces of content uploaded every minute. Plus, video uploads are up 34% year-over-year.
It's got a TikTok/Reels vibe, but video engagement is clearly on the rise. This feature is creating new ways to organically reach audiences, so it's one to keep an eye on.
Social media is the name of the game, and staying ahead of the curve is your winning strategy. Whether you're casually scrolling or professionally strategizing, these updates are your playbook for maxing out your online presence.
