Returning to School with an Incredible Support System

|

Julie Thomm, M.S. IMC Class of Spring 2024

Julie Thomm went back to school as an adult with a full-time job and a family. She knew it would be challenging, but she had an incredible support system and felt confident in her choice.

My favorite memory from my time at WVU was the excitement and support of my family and friends with my decision to return to school to obtain my Master's degree. When I got accepted, my husband and daughter came home with new WVU swag and a WVU Monopoly game. Julie Thomm

Thomm found a mentor in Mike Fulton and has stayed in touch over the years. “He has always championed my professional development and he was one of the first people I reached out to when I contemplated returning to WVU to get my Master's in the IMC program. He supported my decision and encouraged me on the journey. He has taught me the importance of keeping relationships, encouraging younger generations and always being willing to lend a hand when it comes to individuals chasing career and education goals.”

She encourages prospective students that they can do it. “Sometimes it's not easy because we balance so much in our everyday lives but focus on time management and allocating specific time during your days and weeks to school and you can absolutely achieve your goals. Work hard, get to know your instructors and soak it ALL in.”

Thomm is a 2024 graduate of the Integrated Marketing Communications master’s degree. She is from Charleston, WV and currently works for the American Heart Association. She noted it will be weird not having to think about upcoming assignments or respond to the discussion board.
