Enhancing Skills and Finding Community in WVU's IMC Program

After a decade of post-baccalaureate experience, Megan Hansen decided it was time to return to school and enhance her skills for future career opportunities. As a one-woman show in her role, she found the breadth of WVU’s Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) online master’s degree to match her varied skill set and job responsibilities.

Throughout her time in the program, one particular campaign she created in Creative Strategy and Execution stood out to her. Her “edgy” campaign was for a menstrual products company and allowed her to blend audience research with her design skills to craft an impactful, eye-catching campaign. “I enjoyed seeing all the different campaigns my classmates chose to work on during the course,” Hansen added.

Her Brand Equity Management Professor, Al Moffatt, impacted her experience by helping her develop her personal brand and expand her thinking regarding the next steps in her career.

For incoming students, she recommends staying on top of your work each week and working ahead when possible — especially if you are working full time and have families. Hansen also built a community by creating a group text thread for each course. “This is a great way to build community and foster connection when we cannot physically be together in a classroom,” Hansen noted.

I encourage everyone to approach this program with a genuine eagerness to learn and grow professionally, rather than merely aiming for a degree. I learned so much by pouring my heart and soul into each course and assignment. Megan Hansen

The Introduction to IMC course laid a solid foundation for Hansen’s time in the program. She enjoyed learning from David Hazelton, who provided an enriching and affirming learning environment. “The course not only expanded my knowledge but also validated my longstanding work as a creative communicator,” Hansen explained. “It provided an excellent springboard for delving into the more advanced content of subsequent courses.”

Another faculty member who made an impact on Hansen’s learning was Sandra Ducoffe. Hansen noted enjoying her video lectures and the additional learning materials, as well as how responsive Ducoffe was to her questions.

Her proudest moment has been earning a perfect score on her final project and completing an overall A+ in the capstone course.

Hansen, a Summer 2024 graduate of the M.S. IMC program, is a communications specialist at UC Davis Health in Sacramento, CA.
